Intro to Superfoods

in Nutrition

While it's a phrase that circulates widely in the holistic health and nutrition fields, you may not know exactly what "superfoods" are, or why they're important.

Generally speaking, a super food is something that has high phytonutrient content, containing significant levels of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, fiber, and phytoflavanoids. They are naturally occurring substances (meaning that your favorite junk foods, sadly, are not superfoods) that doctors and nutritionists tout as having extraordinary health benefits. A diet rich in superfoods can ward off common health ailments such as high blood pressure, cancer, heart disease, and obesity.

So where do you start? Here's a list of some superfoods and the reasons to start snacking:

Chia-Chia seeds often take the backseat to flax, but these powerfully nutritious seeds are high in easily digestible protein, essentially fatty acids, soluble fiber, minerals, and antioxidants.

Sprouts-The beginning life part of plants, sprouts have the highest concentration of nutrients than plants at any other stage of life. Because sprouts are alive, they contain more vitamins and minerals than even a green salad

Maca-a Peruvian, radish-like perennial is known for it's benefits to the endocrine system. Increased energy, emotional stability, mental clarity, and fertility are all benefits of this plant.

Coconut Water-With an alkalizing effect on the body, coconut water relieves fatigue, digestive disturbances, kidney and bladder disorders, and vision problems like glaucoma and cataract.

Cacao-Not to be confused with cocoa, Cacao beans reduce appetite and aid in the building of healthy nails and bones. It also contains the highest concentration of magnesium than any other food.

While the thought of eating raw beans or sprouts may not be appealing, most superfoods can be added to your diet in a variety of creative ways. Creating a nutrition plan that includes superfoods is an important step in preventing illness and disease, energizing your body, and promoting mental and emotional balance.
